Prioritizing Social Connections with Seniors

Loneliness among seniors is more than just a feeling. Nearly one in four adults over 65 experiences social isolation, which increases risks of depression, cognitive decline, and heart disease. But a meaningful connection can reverse these effects.

A Moment That Changed Everything

I'll never forget meeting one senior at my first origami workshop at Richard & Catherine Nest Adult Activity Center in Fort Lee. She hesitated to join, saying, “My hands shake now. I don’t think I can make anything beautiful anymore.”

However, as we folded a simple crane together, something shifted. Her trembling hands created imperfect folds, but as we worked, she began sharing stories about her late husband and her grandchildren. Her distant eyes suddenly sparkled with life.

By the end, she had made three different animals. They weren’t perfect, but they were beautiful. More importantly, she had connected with someone. She had been seen and valued.

Beyond Small Talk

Real connection with seniors requires:

  • Curiosity - Ask about their life stories and listen to their wisdom

  • Presence - Put away distractions and give your full attention

  • Patience - Let conversations unfold at their own pace

  • Shared Activities - Do something together

The Gift We Receive

Here’s what I've learned: when we connect with seniors, we receive as much as we give. That one senior taught me that beauty is about presence. Every person, regardless of age, needs to feel valued and included.

Moving Forward Together

The next time you have a few extra minutes, use them to brighten a senior’s day. Fold some paper together. Share a story. Listen with your whole heart. These moments of connection might become some of the most meaningful of your own life.

Because we all seek the same thing: to be seen, to be heard, and to know that we matter.

Through Piece with Ease, we bring origami workshops to senior living communities, creating opportunities for connection and joy.
