Why Origami? Benefits of Origami on Senior Health

So…why origami?

Our organization focuses on utilizing origami as the central form of stimulation for senior citizens, particularly those living with Alzheimer's or arthritis due to its wide-ranging benefits.

Origami is more than just folding paper; its an amazing activity that develops both visual and manual thinking, exercising the brain through hand-eye coordination, focus, and concentration. Following the paper-folding instructions activates both the motor and visual regions of the brain, while also helping to challenge memory, sequencing, and problem solving skills. In fact, engaging in origami works both the left and right hemisphere of the brain at the same time!

Beyond cognitive benefits, origami provides stress management and supports emotional well-being. The act of folding papers send impulses to your brain, that in return, release serotonin—a neurotransmitter that is responsible for influencing your mood and promoting feelings of calm and happiness.

As a form of art, origami sparks creativity, reduces anxiety, and even fosters social interaction when practiced in groups. Moreover, it provides a sense of accomplishment; completing a figure can be a confidence booster!

For individuals with arthritis, origami offers gentle physical therapy. The repetitive movements of folding the paper can help maintain mobility in stiff fingers. Folding also strengthens the finger muscles and improves hand coordination. At the same time, the calming, creative process can serve as a welcome distraction from chronic discomfort.

In short, origami is a simple yet powerful activity that strengthens the mind, supports emotional health, and gently exercises the body, making it especially meaningful for seniors facing cognitive or physical challenges.
